The US punk-band Green Day is a genuine terror in America. The band, consisting of three core members: Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, lead vocals, Mike Dirnt (bass) and Tré Cool (drums) is, presently, considered in opposition to the US Government and President Bush.
Their uncensored slang and successful album American Idiot proved they are also brave men. But, this can hardly be called the most crazy thing, they've done in their lives. Their path was full of bizarre and insane events, provoked by their constant bids to thrill seeking. The band was created spontaneously. In 1986, childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt (both 14 years old) formed the two person band Sweet Children. In late 1989, Armstrong, Dirnt and John Kiffmeyer (aka Al Sobrante) formed Green Day.
The same year Green Day released their first single 1000 Hours, which aided establishment of their punk-rock fan-base. The single was followed up by the 39/Smooth in early 1990 after contracting the independent label Lookout! Records. The released in 1992 album Kerplunk led to a wave of interest, coming from music critics all over the world. Their next album Dookie became a commercial sensation, drawn at 5 M. copies in early 1995. In mere 7 weeks the single Basket Case sat on the No 1 position on the Modern Rock Charts.
In 1995, Dookie won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album and the band was nominated for 9 MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year. The new album, Insomniac, which was released in the fall of 1995 was receives positively by the critics.
After taking a break in 1996, Green Day began work on the new album Nimrod, released in 1997, regarded later on as successful. The band, however, surprised their fans with the American idiot, which debuted at No 1 on the Billboard charts and became a breakout success. American Idiot won the 2005 Grammy for "Best Rock Album" and the band swept the 2005 MTV music awards, winning a total of seven of the eight awards they were nominated for, including the coveted Viewer's Choice Award.
